Mike Stepka grew up in Grand Traverse County, attended the public schools in Traverse City and NMC, CMU, and U of D Law School. His wife, Kathy, teaches at TC West High School, and they have two children, Michael, 20, and Elizabeth, 16.  He moved back to Traverse City after graduating from law school in 1990.

Stepka has practiced in the District Court consistently for nearly 20 years and serves on Judge Foresman's Mental Health Court treatment team, the Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners, and is the Board's liaison to the Mental Health Court. He is also on the Women's Resource Center's Board of Directors and is a past president of the GTLA Bar Association.
