Bridging the Gap: Elder Law Insights for Attorneys
In this session, Attorney Ryan Hulst of Grand Traverse Elder Law will provide an overview of elder law practice, with a focus on how it intersects with traditional estate planning. Designed for attorneys who may not specialize in elder law but regularly handle estate planning matters. The presentation will highlight key elder law issues such as Medicaid eligibility, long-term care planning, powers of attorney.
Attendees will gain practical insights into how elder law considerations can impact estate planning strategies, and how to spot red flags that may require specialized attention. The goal is to equip attorneys outside of the elder law practice area with foundational knowledge to better serve aging clients and their families—especially when medical needs or incapacity arise.
Ryan Hulst is the founding attorney of Grand Traverse Elder Law. After growing up in a military family, Ryan attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. He commissioned as an infantry officer, graduated from the U.S. Army Ranger School, and deployed to Afghanistan, where he earned the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Bronze Star. Following his military service, Ryan graduated summa cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law and served as a Judge Advocate in the 4th Infantry Division.
Now based in Traverse City, Ryan leads a practice devoted exclusively to elder law. Grand Traverse Elder Law helps individuals and families navigate the complexities of Medicaid planning, long-term care, powers of attorney, patient advocate designations, wills, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, trust administration, and probate.
